What IвЂ™m sure you can tell though is that it would be difficult to fix the image with the magentaВ shown above even if you did it by hand and knew what you were trying to achieve.

This isВ just conjecture as Adobe provide no details to tell us what they do when recovering clipped channels. I presume that Lightroom is then adding green back into the area to compensate for this but some of the green overlaps into the unclipped areas. So you can see that when the green is clipped, we get a strong magenta cast. IвЂ™ve used Raw Photo Processor to process the image and this is what it shows. To see why this has happened itвЂ™s helpful to show just what the clipped file should look like. The last part of the problem is why has the colour been affected in areas outside the clipped area. How does Lightroom know what shape to reconstruct? Well as far as I can tell, it uses information from the non-clipped layers to guess what the clipped layer should look like. Well, this explains some of the problem.В If I add green to the вЂcorrectвЂ™ image, I get a slightly pukey yellow that matches the clipped photo. WeвЂ™ll try and explain that in a moment but for now, have a look at this graph which shows the green channel before and after Lightroom вЂfixesвЂ™ the clipping (see the black line on the clipping area image above to see the area that this graph represents). Interestingly the colour shift isnвЂ™t just confined to the area that has clipped. HereвЂ™s a crop of that showing the area most affected by the colour shift. Low and behold the file that displayed no clipping in Lightroom is clipped! HereвЂ™s a plot showing the clipped area in the green channel - and not just a bit, a huge amount. So here you go - the green area shows a clipped green channel. This is an application that allows you to look at the actual RGB channel data from a raw file.

Having done a bit of raw file analysis before, I already have the excellent raw analysis software вЂRawdiggerвЂ™ installed. Here's an image showing the difference between the two files (using the difference layer in Photoshop). Now thatвЂ™s pretty clearly different! Not only have pinky clouds changed to yellow, the sky to the right-hand side of it has become slightly bluer. Same as above but adjusted to match exposure
